sequences is confirmed by the thinking over a possible influence on history, even before the people of Enlightenment had the idea to stop the turn of the wheel so that the best-possible situation - peace - remains on top and is lasting.

The presentations of the driving forces of history confirm  the understanding in the possibility to question the mechanical order of the on the fortune wheel sitting figures and to take one's destiny in one's own hands. When related to the picture of the fortune wheel putting a spoke in the wheels of fate  is an act of braking which technically spoken chokes off Fortuna as motor of history or seen politically de-thrones the fortune goddess.

Such acts of breaking - so slowing down or stopping of the wheel of history - have been done in many countries in which people have fought against
heteronomy
, exploitation and suppression. Also the term 'revolution' still contains that historical and political changes are imagined coming from a rotary motion. With that is meant that of the fortune wheel as well as the celestial bodies around a central star.

With a view of the French Revolution Walther Benjamin assumed that ăden revolutionŠren Klassen im Augenblick ihrer Aktion" das "Bewusstsein" eigen ist, "das Kontinuum der Geschichte aufzusprengenŇ ('the revolutionary clases at the moment of their action' have the 'consciousness to break up the continuum of history').* Benjamin saw an intervention in succession of time here, so significant that it
was put into the calender and coming back again as a holiday. What was is taken out of history so-to-say and symbolically concentrated integrated into the present as holiday; so that this day also can be accepted as 'historical time-lapse'*This idea of history is oriented on how time is handled in film; because it is based on succession of events being able to be altered by cut. Also changes in speed by acceleration and consequently also by breaking are possible. The time-lapse corresponds with slow motion. Certainly film also needs wheels to roll the film off the spools and to let it run through the projector  and to present the film again - spooled back. But the breaking-up is also related to the idea of history, which in German is expressed as geological or archaeological stratification so that the covered older strata can be exposed like in a quarry by blasting or clearing away of top strata(the German word "Geschichte" for history comes from the verb "schichten" = to layer/to stratify, so 'Geschichte' = the stratified).


2. An intervention...

At this point I come back to the painting of Ahmet Dilek because now I can give reason for why it is shown here within the subject "Bremsen".
The Turkey-born artist who lives in Hamburg put this canvas in the way of 7000 demonstrators. These were mainly Turkish fellow-citizens who took to the streets on May 27th 2007 in Berlin for a secular Turkey. They remembered the state founding by
Kemal AtatŸrk, who put a spoke into the wheels of history on October 29th 1923.
