earlier texts of Kaprow's.
Kaprow's interest for regularities of movement and forming and changing processes does not only intersperse with his complete art work - such processes can be perceived also in his written reflections which have accompanied his work from the beginning.
Especially in his early writings one can read how one thinks, thinks over, digests, rejects, explains, eliminates, makes statements, draws conclusions,  takes results from his/her experiences or describes which problems he/she faced at a certain time and how the starting situations changed in a different time.

In the documented exhibition in 1991 Kaprow goes back to
7 Environments, which were created for the first time in the years from 1957 to 1964. Kaprow had made re-exhibtions of Environ- ments,  which are then called 'Remades' several times.
The ENVIRONMENT 'Yard' - first created in a sculpture garden of an art collector in New York - was created already 7 or 8 times at different locations and modified depending on circumstances.

Thirty years after the first issue in 1961 Kaprow reacts in 1991 to his own past differently. 30 years after the first issue of Yard Kaprow decides against a 'remade' and for a 'reinvention'.

Kaprow dissolves the once for the Environment typical strategy of overcrowding by which he again and again practically forestalled learned behavior of visitors which is caused by distance and freedom of movement.
Instead of this: hundreds of brandnew tires vertically put up on industrial metall shelves which border the room that has a propped up car in its midst. The instruction for the visitor: he/she is supposed to perform a tire change. To replace the old tires of the car with new ones.
I do not know what happened 1991. I also do not know if I would have changed a tire. And if I would have followed the request to do something what so obviously should make me aware of the missing reality in an artmuseum.

It does seem though that Michel Chevalier and Malte Steiner had neither a 'remade' nor a 'reinvention' of Kaprow's YARD in their minds.
In the invitation they talk about 'activating'.
